Is it better to put more money down up front at the start of a lease?

Although the idea of having a lower monthly payment is appealing to most buyers in a car lease, it is not always the best way to go.

THINK ABOUT THIS:

Putting less money down up front means you lose less or nothing at all if the car is totalled during the first few months of your lease. Although the monthly payment will be higher if you put less money down initially, you end up paying the same amount of money at the end of your lease (That's because a low money factor means negligible interest charges)!

Don't let a higher monthly payment scare you, it may just be the wiser choice.

Instead of making a down payment of $3,000 or $4,000, put that money into a separate bank account and make your higher lease payments out of that account.

If you are looking to lease a car but your credit score isn't the best, consider getting someone that has good credit (family member, friend) to co-sign with you. Having a co-signer could considerably lower your rate and get you a better deal!

What is a Cosigner?
A cosigner lends their good credit to the primary signer on a car loan, guaranteeing the lender or creditor that they’ll pay if the borrower doesn’t. The cosigner guarantees the debt and can be legally responsible for making car payments, plus late fees or collection charges if the borrower defaults on the loan.

• “Cars depreciate fastest in the first two years of ownership.”
• “Cars are built better than ever so there’s less risk than before in buying used.”

So of course, we should all be buying used … right?

7 reasons you should buy a new car instead of a used car

Here are a few things I debated before choosing a new over a used car — and you should too.

1. Cost. Sure, a new car costs more. But over the long term, not that much more. And the value — not just monetarily — can be much higher.

2. Reliability. Above all, you want to get a car that won’t break down.

3. If you buy or lease a new car, you don't necessarily have to put ANY money down, you can just pay the taxes and fees and roll everything else into your monthly payments, this means less initial out of pocket.

4. Interest rate. The interest rate on your car loan will depend on your credit, which is why having a good credit score is so important. If you have a solid credit score, your interest rate will be lower. This becomes more important over a longer-term loan. 

5. Resale value. You’ll be surprised how quickly most cars depreciate and how others (Toyotas and Hondas especially) retain their value.

6. Insurance. The insurance rates are lower for a new car (new cars have more safety features, ex. lane assist, blind spot monitoring) compared to a used car. Even if they’re only slightly different (say, $50 / month), that can add up to real savings over a few years.

7. Gas mileage. With gas prices on a roller-coaster ride, you may want to hedge your bets and consider a fuel-efficient or even hybrid or electric car. This could be an important factor determining the value of a car over the long term.

Spring Driving Tips!

Even though ice and snow are out of season, safe driving isn’t! Springtime driving presents its own hazards.

1. Watch for Pedestrians & Cyclists. As the weather warms, more people will be outside jogging, running, and dog walking. Remember to share the road with bike riders. They have the same right of way as automobiles.

2. Share the road with motorcycles. Because of their speed and size, motorcycles may quickly come in and out of your blind spots. Always take a second look now that motorcycles are out on the road. In addition, be courteous. Motorcycles have the same right to be on the road. If you end up following a motorcycle, maintain a safe following distance of at least four seconds.

 3. A Doe, oh Dear! With springtime comes the deer caving season. Does and fawns will be frequenting roadsides looking for food. It’s not uncommon for drivers to have accidents involving deer strikes. While on back roads and highways at night, don’t drive faster than your headlights so that you can keep an eye out for deer and any other nocturnal critters.

4. Keep an Eye on the Weather. Spring storms pop up quickly, sometimes on the most beautiful days. Download a weather app that will send you push notifications so that you’ll be aware of any watches or warnings for your location.

5. Turn Around Don’t Drown. April showers bring May flowers. Spring weather brings heavy downpours. If you see water running over the road, don’t attempt to drive through it. Instead, find another route.

6. Understand the impact of medications on driving: For many people, spring means seasonal allergies. Over-the-counter allergy drugs can have side effects or interact with other medications to diminish your driving ability.

7. If possible, go around potholes: Deep potholes can throw your car out of alignment or worse, forcing you to buy a new wheel and a new tire. You may be able to file a claim (laws differ from city to city and state to state), but you you'll likely have to prove negligence on the part of the city.

8. Get your Vehicle Serviced. Colder winter months can wear down batteries, engines and tires. 

        ◦Making sure windshield wiper blades and headlights are working well.
        ◦Replace blades at least once a year for best results.
        ◦Checking that rear and brake lights are functioning properly. They help your 

          vehicle be seen in rainy weather.
